Presidential Candidates Dismiss Chance of Forming 3-Party Alliance

Three major presidential candidates, trailing front-runner Moon Jae-in of the Democratic Party, have dismissed the possibility of forming an alliance.

Ahn Cheol-soo of the People’s Party, Hong Joon-pyo of the Liberty Korea Party, and Yoo Seong-min of the Bareun Party revealed their positions on Tuesday night during the fourth television debate hosted by JTBC, the JoongAng Ilbo and the Korean Political Science Association.

Asked by Moon whether the three are willing to agree to field a single candidate among themselves, Hong said he was against it and went on to speculate that the conservative splinter Bareun Party is seeking the three-party alliance to expand its scant political support.

Yoo of the Bareun Party also refuted the suggestion, saying an alliance among the parties requires consent from all of the candidates of the concerned parties and he was unwilling to give his consent.

Ahn also said there will be no alliance between him and other candidates, emphasizing that he has repeated his stance on the issue over 100 times.
