Hwang Calls for Thorough Crackdown on Fake News

Acting President Hwang Kyo-ahn has ordered a thorough crackdown on fake news spreading online during the presidential campaign period.

During a Cabinet meeting on Tuesday, Hwang also instructed prompt fact-checking when suspicious news surfaces on the Internet and social media networks.

He said that the amount of fake news and ungrounded rumors spread throughout the Internet and mobile devices has jumped nearly five times compared to the previous presidential election.

Hwang also said that concerns continue to remain over North Korea’s strategic provocations, including another nuclear test and the launch of an intercontinental ballistic missile. He said, however, the government is maintaining a defense readiness to swiftly counter any North Korean provocation while strengthening its alliance with the U.S.

Tuesday’s Cabinet meet was the last he presided over as acting president before the May ninth presidential election.
