[Candidate 2] Hong Joon-pyo - Liberty Korea Party

Born to a father who had never set foot in a school and a mother who was illiterate, the Liberty Korea Party's Hong Joon-pyo likes to say that his election would show that even a country bumpkin can become president.

The conservative party candidate is a prosecutor-turned-politician. He made a name for himself by leading a corruption scandal that sent political heavyweights, senior prosecutors and the police chief behind bars. He garnered nationwide fame after the case was made into a popular drama.

Considered a pariah within the prosecution, he resigned and became a lawyer. He was soon picked as a parliamentary candidate by former President Kim Young-sam. After four terms as a lawmaker, he became chairman of the ruling party and served two terms as governor of South Gyeongsang Province.

Allegations in 2015 that he received illicit political funds from a businessman almost ended his political career. However an appeals court found him not guilty.
