Presidential Term of Moon Jae-in Begins
Moon Jae-in has begun his official term as the new South Korean president.
The National Election Commission(NEC) held a general meeting at eight a.m. on Wednesday and confirmed the Democratic Party candidate as the winner of Tuesday’s presidential election.
The snap election, necessitated by the removal of impeached ex-President Park Geun-hye over a massive corruption scandal, means the new president’s term began without a transition period.
Moon's five-year term as president began at precisely at 8:09 a.m. when NEC Chairman Kim Yong-deok banged the gavel to declare his election, granting the 64-year-old politician all the presidential rights, including taking command of the nation’s armed forces.
The NEC said Moon garnered 41-point-08 percent of 32-milllion-672-thousand-101 effective ballots.
Hong Joon-pyo of the Liberty Korea Party(LPK) finished second with 24-point-03 percent, while Ahn Cheol-soo of the People’s Party came in third with 21-point-41 percent.
