News2005-11-30

A group of farmers has unveiled plans to stage peaceful protests at next month's ministerial meeting of the World Trade Organization (WTO) in Hong Kong.

A senior member of the Korea Peasants League said in a news conference in Hong Kong Wednesday that the South Korean farmers’ group will conduct its demonstrations in a peaceful manner and will adhere to all local laws governing protests and rallies.

According to the group, around 15-hundred protestors will gather in Hong Kong for the ministerial talks, which are scheduled to open on December 13th for a six-day run. Another 500 protestors from the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions are also expected to take part in rallies.

The WTO talks are expected to discuss scrapping or lowering various trade barriers such as the opening of agricultural markets of developing countries, including South Korea.
