US Separates NK, Iran on Incentives over Nukes
The U.S. State Department has signaled its intent to offer a differing set of incentives to North Korea and Iran to convince them to stop their nuclear arms development.
In a Wednesday briefing, department spokesman Sean McCormack said the two countries have different nuclear histories and that Washington will approach each case separately.
The New York Times reported that European nations are preparing to offer Iran new assistance in building a light-water nuclear reactor for civilian use in return for Tehran's nuclear dismantlement.
Light-water reactors financed by the international community are one of North Korea's persistent demands in exchange for a possible renouncing of its nuclear program.
A U.S.-led international consortium terminated late last year its project to build two light-water reactors for the North after the eruption of the second nuclear standoff with the North.
