Former Generals Urge Halt of Command Transfer

News2006-08-10

A group of former generals has urged the government to halt its move to retrieve wartime operational command of Korean forces from the United States.

Seongwoo Society, a fraternity of ex-generals, Thursday called for a halt to negotiations on changing the structure of the Korea-U.S. Combine Forces Command.

The group also accused Defense Minister Yoon Kwang-ung of breaking his promise to propose delaying the transfer until 2012 to President Roh Moo-hyun.

The group plans to stage a protest rally Friday in Seoul against the government’s command transfer plan which it argues would lead to the withdrawl of U.S. forces and threaten national security.

In an interview with Yonhap News Agency on Wednesday, the president said the government is ready to take over the wartime command even before 2012.
