A group of retired South Korean four-star generals has suggested that the period between 2015 and 2020 would be a better time to regain wartime operational control from the United States.

In a thesis titled "The Future of the Korea-U.S. Alliance," retired Major General Lee Seok-bok said South Korea will be prepared to exercise control by 2015.

Lee added that it would be desirable to complete the handover by 2020 when the South is expected to wrap up its military reform.

Wartime operational control over South Korean troops had belonged to the United States since the Korea War broke in the early 1950s.
