French Woman Tried for Infancticide
The trial for a French woman accused of killing three of her babies and hiding two of them in her freezer in South Korea was held in France on Tuesday.
Veronique Courjault is charged with having killed two of her children, one in 2002 and another in 2003, in Seorae Village in Seoul.
She also confessed to having killed another one of her children in France in 1999, one year before she came to South Korea.
French news outlets predict the woman will be sentenced to life imprisonment, the highest punishment the French court can deliver, noting the cruelty of the murders and the inconsistent results of her psychological assessments.
Courjault’s husband Jean-Louis discovered the corpses in the basement freezer following his return to Korea from a business trip. Both he and his wife denied that the children were theirs, but authorities’ DNA tests proved that they were the parents.
Jean-Louis was cleared of conspiracy charges and released in January of this year. He now lives with the couple’s two other children in France.
