February Shows No Decrease in Birthrate
Birth statistics for the month of February suggest the nation may be on track to reversing its faltering birthrate.
According to Statistics Korea, some 36-thousand-700 babies were born in February, or the same level as February of last year.
Prior to February, the on-year monthly figure had decreased for 23 months in a row.
The number of children born in Daegu, Daejeon and North Chungcheong Province jumped in February, while the figure for other cities and districts remained unchanged or declined slightly from the same month last year.
The number of marriages for February rose nearly four percent year-on-year to stand at around 24-thousand-200.
The number of divorces stood at 86-hundred, down some 12 percent from a year ago. The drop in the figure was the largest to be recorded since November 2008.
