The chief nuclear envoys of South Korea and Japan met in Tokyo on Monday and discussed the issue of providing humanitarian aid to North Korea.

South Korea’s top nuclear envoy Noh Kyu-duk said he and his Japanese counterpart Takehiro Funakoshi exchanged views on the issue, adding that he believes the two countries’ understanding and stance have deepened on the matter. 

Noh added that he and Funakoshi also discussed the North’s latest missile test, saying their discussions did not go beyond their respective government’ stances unveiled shortly after the missile test. 

Earlier in the day, Japan’s Chief Cabinet Secretary Katsunobu Kato said if the North indeed test-fired long-range cruise missiles, the move would be a threat to peace and stability in the region. 

On Tuesday, Noh will attend a three-way meeting with Funakoshi and his U.S. counterparts Sung Kim and later sit down for bilateral talks with Kim.
