EU Mulls Sending Delegation to NK

The European Union may send a delegation to North Korea to support the conclusion of the six-way nuclear talks and Pyongyang’s decision to scrap its nuclear program.

The EU president's office released a statement Thursday saying that it may send delegates to Pyongyang to underscore that its member countries highly value political progress on the Korean Peninsula.

The delegation will consist of three EU leaders: the current EU president, her successor, and foreign policy chief Javier Solana. The statement, however, did not state their visit's purpose or timing.

The European Union's 27 member countries take turns holding its top posts. German Prime Minister Angela Merkel currently holds the EU presidency and will be succeeded by a leader from Portugal at the end of June.

The EU earlier hailed the conclusion of the six-way talks as an important step to implement the six-nation September 2005 joint statement, pledging support for efforts to bring peace and stability to the Korean Peninsula.
