Defense Ministry Denies Rescue Operations
The Defense Ministry in Seoul says there have been no military operations to rescue the Korean hostages in Afghanistan.
In an interview with Arab satellite TV, Al-Jazeera, Kim Young-sik, chief of the ministry’s overseas troop deployment team, said the 23 Koreans kidnapped by the Taliban militia group in Afghanistan were engaged in medical service work, and not religious activities.
Kim said the Dongui and Dasan units stationed in Afghanistan are non-combat, carrying out medical assistance and aiding in reconstruction of the country’s infrastructure.
