Contamination at Yongbyon to Delay IAEA Work

Japan's Kyodo News says that international inspectors have found small-scale radioactive contamination at North Korea's Yongbyon nuclear facilities.

Kyodo reported Wednesday that International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) inspectors discovered the contamination at two of the five facilities at Yongbyon.

The two contaminated facilities are the five-megawatt nuclear reactor and the spent-fuel reprocessing facility.

The U.N. nuclear agency said that the contamination is likely to delay IAEA officials' work to set up equipment for monitoring the shutdown.

Kyodo quoted IAEA officials as saying that the contamination was probably caused by the North’s pursuit of nuclear development without proper safety measures.

IAEA officials are said to be taking “decontamination steps” at the facilities to ensure the safety of its personnel who are setting up monitoring cameras and carrying out work to seal the nuclear facilities.
