'US Rep to Visit NK Mission on Family Reunion'

U.S. Congressman Mark Kirk will reportedly visit North Korea's U.N. Mission in New York next Monday to propose reunions for Korean Americans with their relatives in North Korea.

Representative Kirk co-chairs the bipartisan congressional commission on separated families.

Radio Free Asia reported on his planned visit while introducing Cardinal Nicholas Cheong Jin-suk's meeting on Thursday with U.S. lawmakers in Washington regarding family reunions.

The Republican congressman told Cardinal Cheong that over a thousand Korean family members are confirmed in the United States so far and that he believes at least two thousand are necessary for a successful reunion session.

Some 500-thousand Korean Americans are believed to have family in the communist state.
