'Pyongyang Moves to Improve Relations With Tokyo'

News2007-09-28

A Japanese daily says North Korea is showing a more positive approach to improving relations with Tokyo after Japan's new Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda launched his Cabinet on Tuesday.

The Tokyo Shimbun reported there are signs that Pyongyang is moving to improve relations with Tokyo, a move detected during the six-party talks in Beijing which opened Thursday.

According to the daily, North Korea said on the first day of talks that it will ‘make an effort’ to resolve the issue of abducted Japanese civilians, an issue which has strained relations between the two countries for years.

It added that the change in attitude is most likely due to the emphasis Prime Minister Fukuda has put on dialogue between countries.
