Defense ministers of the two Koreas will continue discussions regarding key issues on the second day of talks in Pyongyang Wednesday.

On the first day of discussions Tuesday, the two sides discussed the establishment of a joint fishing area as part of a proposed special peace zone in the West Sea.

The South’s delegation proposed that the Koreas each provide an area of the same size around the Northern Limit Line (NLL) for setting up the joint fishing area and gradually expand the area after tentatively operating a section of the area.

However, the North adhered to its demand of creating the joint fishing area south of the de facto inter-Korean sea border.

The NLL was unilaterally drawn as a sea border by the U.N. Command in 1953 after the Korean War ended. In contrast, the military demarcation line, the overland border, was agreed on by the North and the U.N. Command.

Meanwhile, attention is being drawn to whether South Korean Defense Minister Kim Jang-soo will meet North Korean leader Kim Jong-il during his stay in the communist state.
