Protests Over US Beef Spread Nationwide

Protests against the resumption of U.S. beef imports have spread across the nation.

Civil organizations and online communities have railed against the government's decision last month to allow the import of all parts and ages of American beef products.

Civic groups are planning candlelight vigils Tuesday in central Seoul and in front of the National Assembly.

Protest organizers told reporters the groups have launched an emergency council to stand up against American beef imports.

Meanwhile, police banned the use of political slogans and picket signs at the planned candlelight vigils. Authorities threatened to indict any lawbreakers.

A civic group, Human Rights Joint Meeting, held a news conference Tuesday morning stating that the police were enforcing arbitrary rules. The group demanded that police withdraw their decision to bring criminal charges against protesters.
