Inter-Korean Cargo Trains Running Empty
Cargo trains are virtually running empty on the inter-Korean Gyeongui Railway.
The cargo service was launched in December last year 56 years after cross-border railways were severed.
Korea Railroad of South Korea said cross-border trains transported cargo for just eleven days, about 13 percent of the entire 87 operational days from December 11th to April.
In March and April, shipments carried by the trains decreased to two tons from 263 tons and 57 tons in December and January.
A Seoul official said South Korean companies running factories in the Gaeseong Industrial Complex mainly use cross-border cargo trains, but that they prefer cars for transportation since they manufacture a small quantity of products.
