FTA Hearing Ends Without Agreement

Rival parties have failed to narrow differences in a parliamentary hearing on ratification of the Korea-U.S. free trade agreement (FTA).

The committee on unification, foreign affairs and trade adjourned early Thursday after rival camps refused to give in to each other’s demands.

The main opposition United Democratic Party (UDP) said it would support the ruling camp's bid to present the FTA ratification bill to a subcommittee for deliberation if the government renegotiates with the U.S. on the resumption of beef imports.

The ruling Grand National Party (GNP), for its part, called for opposition camp support while expressing regret over the delayed ratification of the FTA due to the beef dispute.
