Nation Marks 2nd Inter-Korean Naval Clash
The nation has marked the seventh anniversary of the Yellow Sea naval clash with North Korea that occurred in June 2002.
A ceremony marking the anniversary of the "Second Yeonpyeong Naval Battle" was held at the command of the Second Naval Fleet Monday morning with two-thousand people attending.
In a commemorative message delivered during the ceremony, Prime Minister Han Seung-soo called the sea battle a victory over North Korean naval forces who crossed the Northern Limit Line that divides the two Koreas in the Yellow Sea.
He added that the nation should strengthen its national military power and security to prevent another possible inter-Korean military clash.
Two North Korean patrol boats crossed the western maritime border between the two Koreas and attacked a South Korean ship at 10 a.m. on June 29th, 2002.
The 25-minute naval clash killed six and wounded 18 South Korean sailors, destroying the speed boat "Chamsuri 35."
Thirteen North Korean sailors were killed and 25 were wounded during the sea battle.
The first inter-Korean sea battle near Yeonpyeong Island occurred on June 15th, 1999.
