Incheon Int'l Airport Posts Record Transfer Rate

Incheon International Airport posted a record-high transfer rate last month, solidifying the airport’s position as a major hub airport in Northeast Asia.

The airport’s CEO, Lee Chae-wook, said Wednesday that last month 490-thousand out of a total of two-point-two million international line passengers transferred flights at the airport, posting an airport transfer rate of 22 percent.

The airport’s monthly transfer rate had stood at around ten percent since the airport opened in March 2001. Then, last December, the rate jumped to 20-point-three percent and then to 20-point-four percent this January. The rate then returned to around ten percent between the February and August period before posting a record high in September.

The airport attributed the rise in the figure to the growing number of foreigners that are seeking to take advantage of the relative weakness of the Korean won. Active marketing by large tourist agencies abroad was also thought to have played a part in the jump in the airport transfer rate.
