[News] l 2016-07-28

The first contingent of the athletes and officials who will represent South Korea during the upcoming Rio de Janeiro Olympics has arrived in Brazil.

The chartered flight, carrying 120 athletes and officials, including the head of the delegation Chung Mong-gyu, arrived at the Rio de Janeiro–Galeão International Airport on Thursday, Korean time.

Around 70 South Korean fans as well as around 30 locals of Korean heritage welcomed them at the airport, playing Korean traditional musical instruments.

The delegation left Incheon International Airport 25 hours earlier and traveled to Brazil via Dubai.

Upon arrival, Chung said Team Korea will do its best to repay the public support with good results.

He in particular thanked the Korean residents in Brazil for showing up at the airport to show their support, saying it will give great encouragement to the athletes.

The South Korean team is scheduled to begin training in Rio on Thursday morning.

The 333-member South Korean squad, including 204 athletes and 129 officials, will compete in 24 out of 28 sports at the Rio Games, with an aim of a top ten finish and at least ten gold medals.
