Gov't Advises Extra Safety Caution During Rio Olympics

[News] l 2016-07-13

The Foreign Ministry has urged South Koreans to exercise extra caution when traveling to Brazil for the Summer Olympics, citing unstable security situations, terrorism and infectious diseases as factors affecting safety there.

A ministry official told reporters Wednesday that the political and economic confusion and the absence of a South Korean diplomatic mission are also factors threatening the safety of South Koreans during the Rio de Janeiro Summer Games set for next month

The official said the assessment was made based on the results of on-site checkups of the Olympic venues carried out last week by a safety inspection team led by Ambassador for Overseas Koreans and Consular Affairs Han Dong-man.

In particular, the official said the possibility of the Islamic State carrying out acts of terror on the occasion of the Olympics cannot be ruled out though local authorities assured the inspection team to not be concerned about terrorism.

The official said the government will consider raising its travel alert already in place if local security situations worsen.
