Reporter: The South Korean men's Olympic football team started its quest for a second consecutive Olympic football medal with a strong start by thumping Fiji 8-0 in their Group C opener at the Rio Summer Olympics.

During the match held at the Fonte Nova Arena in Salvador, South Korea, lead by coach Shin Tae-yong, controlled the action throughout, but they were unable to crack the Fiji defense until the 32nd minute when midfielder Ryu Seung-woo opened the scoring with an assist from Kwon Chang-hoon.

South Korea's under-23 side continued their dominance in the second half with a goal bonanza.

Kwon's goal in the 62nd minute was the first of three goals South Korea would score in a two-minute span.

Tottenham Hotspur forward Son Heung-min scored a penalty in the 72nd extending South Korea's lead to 5-0, just a couple of minutes after coming off the bench.

Five minutes later FC Porto striker Suk Hyun-jun struck home and then again in the 91st minute.

Ryu completed his hat-trick just before the final whistle, becoming the first men’s Olympic football player to do so since Argentina's Carlos Tevez in Athens 2004.

Team Korea will square off with Germany at the same venue on Sunday and then head to Brasilia to face defending Olympic champions Mexico to close off the group stages.

The top two teams from each group will reach the quarterfinals.
