5. Pyeongchang Selected to Host 2018 Winter Olympics
Pyeongchang in Gangwon Province was selected to host the 2018 Winter Olympics on July sixth.

The South Korean county gained the majority of votes in the first round of voting at the International Olympic Committee's 123rd General Assembly in Durban, South Africa. It beat Germany’s Munich and the French city of Annecy to win the hosting rights.

Pyeongchang lost two previous bids to host the Winter Games, coming up short to Canada’s Vancouver in 2010 and Russia’s Sochi in 2014.

By hosting the 2018 Winter Olympics, South Korea will become the sixth nation in the world to host the world’s top four sporting events, including the Summer and Winter Olympics, the FIFA World Cup and the World Championships in Athletics. The only other countries in the world that have hosted the four sports events are France, Germany, Italy, Japan and Russia.

Meanwhile, on August 27th, the 13th IAAF World Championships in Athletics opened in Daegu for a nine-day run. One-thousand-945 athletes from 202 countries took part in the event. The championships were assessed to be a success judging by the way events were conducted and organized.
