8. S.Korean Athletes Take World Sports Stage
South Korea performed well in a number of international sporting competitions this year.

South Korea sent its largest-ever group of athletes to the Vancouver Winter Olympics in February, where Team Korea won six gold, six silver and two bronze medals at the event to rank fifth in terms of gold medals.

At the games, South Korea grabbed the gold in both the men’s and women’s 500-meter speed skating events and the men’s ten-thousand meter speed skating event.

South Korea’s Kim Yu-na won the gold medal in women's figure skating, setting a world record in the process. In doing so, she became the first South Korean to win an Olympic medal in figure skating. She also became the first female figure skater to achieve the "grand slam" by finishing atop the World Grand Prix Final, the Four Continents Championships, the World Championships and the Winter Olympics.

In June, despite high expectations, South Korea failed to advance to the World Cup quarterfinals during the FIFA World Cup in South Africa.

During the Asian Games in Guangzhou, China, in November, South Korea ranked second in the overall medal tally for the fourth consecutive time after winning 76 gold, 65 silver and 91 bronze medals.
