Kindergartens, elementary, middle and high schools in South Korea opened on Tuesday for in-person classes for the new school year amid lingering concerns over COVID-19 infections.

According to the Ministry of Education, under the current Level Two social distancing rules, kindergarteners, first and second graders at elementary schools, high school seniors and special education students across the country will be allowed to have in-person classes every day.

Students in other grades will likely go to school two or three times a week and take online classes the other days, according to attendance caps in each region.

The government also eased the criteria for small schools, which are allowed to have in-person classes every day.

Some six-thousand elementary, middle and high schools, or about half of the total schools, fall into this category.
