The nominee for the U.S. deputy secretary of state said on Wednesday that the United States has to use every tool available, including pressure, to prevent North Korea from advancing its nuclear capability.
Wendy Sherman made the remarks at her confirmation hearing before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.
The deputy secretary-designate said that unless North Korea comes to the table to really make progress in denuclearization, the U.S. will use "every tool" that it has to prevent it from doing so. She did not elaborate further on which tools.
Sherman then added that she certainly wants China not to play an adverse role in that process.
The remarks came when she was asked if the U.S. may impose additional sanctions against Chinese companies dealing with North Korea in order to apply pressure on the North.
The former under secretary of state also stressed the importance of working with allies and partners, in particular South Korea and Japan, regarding North Korea issues.
