President Moon Jae-in met his Vietnamese counterpart Nguyen Xuan Phuc on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly to discuss bilateral relations and future cooperation.

The two leaders met at a New York hotel on Tuesday, local time, in their first face-to-face summit since President Phuc took office in April this year.

The two leaders agreed to upgrade their current "strategic cooperative partnership" established in 2009 to the next level next year, which marks the 30th anniversary of the two countries’ diplomatic relations.

President Moon noted the need for cooperation in the face of new challenges - including a post-pandemic economic recovery and climate change.

He asked Vietnam, currently a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for a two-year term, to play a constructive role in resuming dialogue with North Korea.

The two leaders also reaffirmed their support for ASEAN’s role in reestablishing peace and democracy in Myanmar.
