Rival parties are in last-minute talks to decide the fate of controversial revisions to the Press Arbitration Act.
Lawmakers had agreed last month to hold discussions for another month before the bill is put forward in a plenary session on Monday.
Whether this will happen is still unclear as the floor leaders of the ruling Democratic Party(DP) and main opposition People Power Party(PPP) failed to narrow differences in talks in the morning and at lunch. They will meet again at 3:30 p.m.
The DP-proposed amendment centers on increasing punitive damages against fake news but has been criticized for potentially undermining press freedom.
The rival camps agreed to further discuss the bill through an eight-member consultative body but have yet to reach common ground. The DP has warned it will push the bill through the plenary session with or without a consensus.
However, the mood is more discrete within the party as it is aware of other ongoing scandals. Additionally, President Moon Jae-in voiced the need for caution over the media bill.
