Events were held across South Korea on Saturday to commemorate the victims of the pro-democracy movement in Myanmar as the country's military continues to brutally crack down on anti-coup protesters.

An event took place in the southwestern city of Gwangju, which experienced similar suffering in its own democratic uprising in May of 1980.

A civic coalition led by the May 18 Memorial Foundation hosted the ceremony at the May 18 Democracy Square in Gwangju to remember the lives lost in Myanmar in what is now known as the "spring revolution" opposing the military coup.

Participants laid red roses as it is customary in Myanmar to offer red flowers to the deceased. The official death toll from the bloody crackdown stands at around 330 and includes children.

One Myanmar student who attended the memorial event said the country will not forget Korea's help if it achieves democratization and appealed for international solidarity.

Similar events were also held in Seoul, Daegu, Daejeon and Incheon while video footage was shared with people in the Southeast Asian nation.

In a statement by a Foreign Ministry spokesperson, South Korea on Sunday strongly condemned the crackdown as "barbaric violence" and called on Myanmar security forces to stop opening fire on their own people and cease the unacceptable violence.
