US Confirms Its Goal on N. Korean Nuke Issue is CVID

The U.S. has confirmed its goal regarding the upcoming negotiations with North Korea on the regime’s nuclear program is the North's complete, verifiable and irreversible dismantlement(CVID).

In a statement released on Thursday, the White House said U.S. President Donald Trump will build on the substantial progress achieved by the Trump administration to realize the goal of CVID.

The statement clears up confusion stemming from a recent remark by U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in which he said the U.S. wants “permanent, verifiable and irreversible nuclear dismantlement” or PVID.

PVID puts emphasis on permanent denuclearization and was considered by some a stronger demand than CVID.

Adding to the initial confusion was the emphasis by U.S. National Security Adviser John Bolton that the North should dispose of its weapons of mass destruction(WMD), possibly including chemical and biological weapons in addition to its nuclear weapons.

Bolton’s remarks indicated that Washington may be getting tougher on making a deal with the North and raised speculation about possible turbulence in the preliminary negotiations between the U.S. and the North ahead of their summit.
