Inter-Korean High-level Talks to Open on Wednesday

News2018-05-15

South and North Korea will hold high-level talks on Wednesday to discuss the implementation of the Panmunjeom Declaration adopted during last month’s inter-Korean summit.

The meeting will be held at the Peace House on the southern side of the truce village of Panmunjeom.

The Unification Ministry said on Tuesday that it accepted the North’s proposal to hold the high-level talks on Wednesday, two days later than its initial offer for Monday.

Pyongyang notified Seoul of its plan to dispatch a 29-member delegation to the talks, which will be led by Ri Son-gwon, chairman of the Committee for the Peaceful Reunification of the Fatherland. Also in the delegation will be vice ministers of railways and sports.

South Korea will send a delegation of some five officials with Unification Minister Cho Myoung-gyon as the chief delegate.

It is the first high-level talks the two Koreas will hold to discuss follow-ups and specific plans for the implementation of the inter-Korean declaration produced as a result of the historic summit between President Moon Jae-in and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un on April 27th.

Wednesday’s talks are expected to focus coordinating views on high-level military talks that the two Koreas agreed to hold within May under the Panmunjeom Declaration and on inter-Korean Red Cross talks that will discuss arrangements for holding reunions of separated families on August 15th.
