Report: As North Korea threatened to reconsider a planned summit with the U.S., President Donald Trump reassured that he is not pursuing the so-called Libya model of nuclear dismantlement and would offer strong security guarantees in return for denuclearization.
Speaking during a meeting with NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg at the White House on Thursday, Trump said that North Korean leader Kim Jong-un will get "very adequate protection" and the best thing he could do is to make a deal.

"The Libyan model that was mentioned was a much different deal. This would be with Kim Jong-un, something where he'd be there, he'd be in his country, he'd be running his country."
Trump also reiterated that the North would see economic compensation if it scraps its nuclear weapons.

“His country would be very rich. His people are tremendously industrious. If you look at South Korea, this would be, really, a South Korean model in terms of their industry, in terms of what they do. They’re hardworking, incredible people.”
However, Trump warned that if no agreement comes on the North’s nuclear issue, Pyongyang could suffer the same fate as Libya.

“If you look at that model with Qaddafi, that was a total decimation. We went in there to beat him. Now that model would take place if we don’t make a deal, most likely. But if we make a deal, I think Kim Jong-un is going to be very, very happy. I really believe he’s going to be very happy.”
Asked if he could be at odds with his national security adviser John Bolton, who has been pushing the Libya model, Trump said Bolton was only making clear that the North’s denuclearization must take place.
Explaining the North's sudden shift, Trump said that Beijing could be influencing Pyongyang, before stressing that preparations for the summit are proceeding smoothly.
