Report: A senior North Korean diplomat has threatened to reconsider the planned summit between the U.S. and North Korea, blasting recent remarks by U.S. Vice President Mike Pence.
According to a report by the North's official Korean Central News Agency(KCNA) on Thursday, Vice Foreign Minister Choe Son-hui said that she would propose a reconsideration of the summit to the North's leadership if the U.S. insults the North's good will and continues its "unlawful and outrageous acts."
The vice minister condemned an interview by Pence during which he said that the U.S. could adopt the so-called Libya model when dealing with the North.
In 2004, the Libyan regime led by Muammar Gaddafi agreed to abandon its nuclear aspirations in a deal with the U.S. but Gaddafi was ousted from power and killed by NATO-backed forces in 2011.
Choe lashed out at Pence for saying during a recent interview with Fox News that North Korea could end up like Libya if it fails to make a nuclear deal with Washington and that a military option for the North was never excluded.
Pence also said the U.S. will not offer concessions to North Korea until it sees verifiable and irreversible denuclearization initiated.
Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump told reporters at the White House on Wednesday that he will know next week whether his meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un will take place on June 12th in Singapore as scheduled, adding that it could very well happen.
Trump’s remarks follow a Washington Post report that the White House will send a team to Singapore this weekend for a planning meeting with North Korean officials.
