N. Korea Dismantles Main Nuclear Test Site

News2018-05-24

North Korea has dismantled its nuclear test site.

According to the South Korean press corps invited to observe the event, the North set off a series of explosions at the Punggye-ri nuclear test site in Kilju County in North Hamgyong Province on Thursday, beginning with the second tunnel and an observatory at 11 a.m. local time.

The third and fourth tunnels were blown up by 4:17 p.m.

The Associated Press also reported that the demolition was held in the presence of foreign journalists, including its own crew.

Earlier this month, the North’s Foreign Ministry said it would allow reporters from five countries --- South Korea, the United States, China, Russia and the U.K. --- to observe the demolition of the Punggye-ri site.

The North has conducted six nuclear tests at the site over a span of more than ten years. The dismantlement is the first follow-up measure Pyongyang is taking toward denuclearization as promised during last month's inter-Korean summit.
