Trump Cancels Summit with Kim
U.S. President Donald Trump has canceled his summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un scheduled to be held in Singapore next month.
The White House announced Thursday that Trump sent a letter to Kim in which the U.S. president cited North Korea's "tremendous anger and open hostility" in a recent statement as the reason behind the cancellation.
He was apparently referring to comments made by a North Korean diplomat on Thursday, who condemned U.S. Vice President Mike Pence for remarks he recently made that North Korea could end up like Libya if it fails to make a nuclear deal with Washington and that a military option for the North was never excluded.
In the letter Trump said he was very much looking forward to being there but felt that at this time it is inappropriate to have the long-planned meeting.
Trump said "You talk about your nuclear capabilities, but ours are so massive and powerful that I pray to God they will never have to be used."
He added that the letter should serve to represent that the summit, for the good of both parties, "but to the detriment of the world," will not take place.
Trump ended the letter by saying Kim should call him if he changed his mind.
