Pompeo: N. Korea Wasn't Replying to Summit Preparation Efforts

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said that President Trump canceled his planned summit with North Korea in part because the U.S. did not receive replies from Pyongyang on preparations for the meeting.

According to Reuters and AFP, Pompeo said Thursday that Washington was not in a position to believe that there could be a successful outcome, adding the president communicated pretty clearly in his letter to North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.

The secretary made the remarks before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee just minutes after the White House said Trump was canceling the summit.

Pompeo said that over the past many days, Washington has endeavored to do what Kim and he had agreed, which was to put preparation teams together to prepare for the summit, but it had received no response to its inquiries from the North.
