UN Chief 'Deeply Concerned' by Canceled Summit

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said Thursday that he was "deeply concerned" after U.S. President Donald Trump canceled a widely anticipated summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.

Guterres said during disarmament talks in Geneva that he is deeply concerned by the cancellation of the planned meeting, urging the parties to continue their dialogue to find a path to a peaceful and verifiable denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.

Japanese media quickly covered the canceled summit. Japan's Kyodo News broke the story at 10:45 p.m. Thursday immediately after Trump's announcement.

NHK, Yomiuri and Asahi Shimbun dailies also reported the news, saying that Trump pulled out of the summit citing the North's tremendous anger and open hostility.

Russia's official TASS news agency also issued a full report on the cancellation, covering details of Trump's letter to the North Korean leader.
