Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha and U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo discussed President Donald Trump’s decision to call off the U.S.-North Korea summit over the phone on Friday. 

According to the Foreign Ministry in Seoul, Pompeo explained in detail how Trump came to the decision and made clear that Washington is intent on continuing dialogue with Pyongyang. 

He then urged Seoul to make joint efforts with Washington to create conditions for dialogue between the U.S. and North Korea to take place. 

Kang expressed regret over the cancellation of the summit which she said would have served as a key turning point for the complete denuclearization and establishment of peace on the Korean Peninsula. 

Kang called on Seoul and Washington to exert efforts to continuously use the opportunity for U.S.-North Korea talks, citing that Trump had personally expressed his intention to keep the door open for dialogue.
