"Based on the recent statement of North Korea, I've decided to terminate the planned summit in Singapore on June 12th."

U.S. President Donald Trump has canceled next month’s planned summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un following what he called Pyongyang’s recent “anger and open hostility.”

Trump sent a letter to Kim on Thursday in which he announced his decision to withdraw from the scheduled meeting, citing the belligerent tone adopted by the North in a recent statement, a decision which he later confirmed at the White House.

He was apparently referring to comments made by the North's Vice Foreign Minister Choe Son-hui on Thursday. Choe had condemned U.S. Vice President Mike Pence for remarks he recently made that North Korea could end up like Libya if it fails to make a nuclear deal with Washington and that a military option for the North was never excluded.

In the letter, Trump boasted of the U.S.’ nuclear capabilities and later warned that the U.S.' military would be ready should the North act recklessly.

"I've spoken to General Mattis and the Joint Chiefs of Staff and our military, which is by far the most powerful anywhere in the world, that has been greatly enhanced recently, as you all know, is ready if necessary."
"In the meantime our very strong sanctions, by far the strongest sanctions ever imposed and maximum pressure campaign will continue as it has been continuing."

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said that President Trump canceled the summit in part because the U.S. did not receive replies from Pyongyang on preparations for the meeting.

According to media reports, Pompeo said Thursday that Washington was not in a position to believe that there could be a successful outcome to the summit.

Pompeo said that over the past many days, Washington has endeavored to do what Kim and he had agreed, which was to put preparation teams together to prepare for the summit, but it had received no response to its inquiries from the North.

Despite the cancellation, Trump did add that the summit could still take place at a later date should the right conditions be met.
