Trump Says N. Korea Summit Can Still Happen on June 12

U.S. President Donald Trump has said the summit he canceled with North Korea could still take place.

He tweeted Saturday that "very productive talks" were under way with North Korea about reinstating the summit which he said if it goes ahead will likely remain in Singapore on the same date, June 12th.

He added that if necessary, it will be extended beyond that date.

The tweet comes 12 hours after Trump first mentioned that the summit could still go ahead.

On Friday, Trump welcomed a statement made by North Korean Vice Foreign Minister Kim Kye-gwan. The U.S. president tweeted “Very good news to receive the warm and productive statement from North Korea. We will soon see where it will lead, hopefully to long and enduring prosperity and peace. Only time (and talent) will tell!”

In a later press conference at the White House, Trump said that discussions were ongoing with the North.

The move came a day after his cancellation of the summit in an open letter to North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.
