North Korean Top Official Wheels Up for New York

Anchor: Working-level discussions between North Korea and the United States are under way in Korea and Singapore in advance of a possible summit. Key officials have wrapped up meetings at the truce village of Panmunjeom, and Kim Yong-chol, a top aide to North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, is flying to New York to meet U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo. Bae Joo-yon has more.

Report: A White House spokeswoman confirms Kim Yong-chol is scheduled to meet with U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in New York later this week.

Kim, vice chairman of the Korean Workers' Party central committee and a member of leader Kim Jong-un's inner circle, boarded an Air China flight bound for New York early Wednesday afternoon in Beijing.

He spent the previous day in Beijing, fueling speculation he may have been meeting with senior Chinese officials.

Meanwhile, at the inter-Korean truce village of Panmunjeom, U.S. envoy Sung Kim, met with North Korean officials.

The two sides are now expected to focus on agenda items for the much-anticipated Washington-Pyongang summit. American officials have called for a "package deal" to denuclearize the Korean Peninsula while the North prefers a "phased and synchronized" process.

And, in Singapore, North Korean and U.S. delegates are coordinating logistics and protocol-related issues for the potential Trump-Kim talks, which may happen as previously scheduled June 12th.

In Washington, White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders said only that the two sides are "moving forward."
