N. Korean Official to Visit Washington to Deliver Kim's Letter to Trump

A top North Korean official will visit Washington on Friday to deliver a letter from leader Kim Jong-un to U.S. President Donald Trump.

Trump told reporters on Thursday before leaving for Texas that a North Korean delegation in New York will visit Washington to deliver to him a letter from Kim, adding meetings to prepare for his potential summit with Kim have been "very positive."

Trump said that although he doesn't know what the letter will say, he expects that it will be very positive.

The U.S. President said that he hopes to still meet Kim on June 12, but hinted at the possibility of additional summits with the North Korean leader.

He said that he wants the summit to be very meaningful and that doesn't mean it gets all done in one meeting, adding "you have to have a second or third, and maybe we'll have none, but it's in good hands."

Kim Yong-chol, Vice Chairman of the North's ruling Workers' Party's Central Committee, arrived in New York Wednesday to prepare for the expected summit. He had a working dinner with U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and the pair held talks on Thursday.

Kim is the highest-ranking North Korean official to visit the U.S. in 18 years. In October 2000, Vice Marshal Jo Myong-rok visited Washington and met President Bill Clinton at the White House.
