Two Koreas Agree to Hold Red Cross, Military, Sports Talks in June

The two Koreas have agreed to hold both Red Cross talks and high-level military talks later this month.

During the high-level talks held on Friday at the Peace House in the southern part of the truce village of Panmunjeom, South and North Korea reached a set of agreements to follow up on the Panmunjeom Declaration announced during the inter-Korean summit in April.

They agreed to hold Red Cross talks on June 22nd at the North's Mount Geumgang resort to discuss logistics of arranging family reunions to mark Korea’s Independence Day on August 15th.

The general-level military talks intended to ease military tensions between the two sides will be held at Tongilgak on the northern side of Panmunjeom on June 14th.

Sports-related officials from the two Koreas are also scheduled to meet at Peace House of Panmunjeom on June 18th to discuss a possible joint participation in the August Asian Games in Jakarta.

The two sides agreed to set up a liaison office at the Gaeseong Industrial Zone as soon as possible, and to work towards a joint inter-Korean event commemorating the first inter-Korean summit in June 2000.

Unification Minister Cho Myoung-gyon spearheaded the South Korean side during Friday’s high-level talks, alongside Vice Land, Infrastructure and Transport Minister Kim Jeong-ryeol.

Other South Korean negotiators included Vice Culture Minster Roh Tae-kang, deputy director-general of the Office of the Prime Minister Ahn Moon-hyun, and Kim Nam-jung, a senior official at Seoul's Unification Ministry.

The North’s five-member delegation was led by Ri Son-gwon, chairman of the Committee for the Peaceful Reunification of Fatherland, and included deputy minister of railways Kim Yun-hyok and Vice Sports Minister Won Kil-u.
