Short Track Skater Lim Wins S. Korea's 1st Gold at PyeongChang

Lim Hyo-jun has won South Korea’s first gold medal at the Winter Olympics the country is playing host to.

The 21-year-old short track speed skater won the men’s 1,500-meter final held at Gangneung Ice Arena on Saturday with an Olympic record time of 2:10.485.

Sjinkie Knegt of the Netherlands came in second at 2:10.555 and Semen Elistratov from Russia finished third 2:10.687.

Lim’s win brings home Team Korea’s first of any medal at the PyeongChang Olympics and makes him the first South Korean man to win an Olympic gold in short track speed skating in eight years.

His teammate Hwang Dae-heon fell during the final and couldn’t finish the race and while Seo Yi-ra failed to advance to the final.

North Korea’s Choe Un-song also competed at the 1,500-meter preliminary in the country’s debut in short track discipline, but did not make it to the next round.

Meanwhile, the South Korean women short track skaters won Heat 1 of 3,000-meter relay on Saturday to advance to the final. The Koreans, including Choi Min-jeong, Shim Suk-hee, Kim Ye-jin, and Lee Yu-bin clocked a time of 4:06.387. The final will be held on February 20th.

In women’s 500-meter preliminaries also held on Saturday, Choi, ranked No. 1 in the world, set the Olympic record of 42-point-872 seconds to cruise to the quarterfinals, while Shim and Kim A-lang failed to make the cut.
