Canada’s Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir set a new world record in the ice dance short program on Monday and took the lead in the event at the PyeongChang Winter Olympics.

The Canadian duo put on an impressive display at the Gangneung Ice Arena to earn a score of 83-point-67, improving on the world record score they set back in October.

French ice dancers Gabriella Papadakis and Guillaume Cizeron finished in second place and Americans Madison Hubbell and Zachary Donohue placed third.

The South Korean team of Min Yu-ra and Alexander Gamelin also progressed to Tuesday’s free dance program, as they finished in 16th place out of the 24 competing teams. The top 20 teams qualified for the final stage of the event.

Min and Gamelin were both born in the U.S., but are eligible to represent South Korea as Min has Korean heritage and Gamelin passed a citizenship test.
