Sofia Goggia put on a superb performance at the PyeongChang Winter Olympics on Wednesday to become the first Italian woman to win a downhill skiing Olympic gold.

Goggia clocked a time of one minute-39-point-22 seconds at the Jeongseon Alpine Centre to finish just nine hundredths of a second ahead of Norway’s Ragnhild Mowinckel.

It meant that Mowinckel had to settle for her second silver of the games after she finished second in the giant slalom last week.

American Lindsey Vonn, who won the downhill skiing event at the 2010 Vancouver Games, took the bronze medal.

Vonn’s podium finish meant she became the oldest female medalist in alpine skiing at the Winter Olympics at the age of 33.
