The U.S. women’s ice hockey team defeated Canada in a tight final at the PyeongChang Winter Olympics on Thursday to claim its first Olympic gold medal in 20 years.

The U.S. team won 3-2 in a sudden-death shootout at the Gangneung Hockey Centre to finally put an end to Canada’s dominance of women’s Olympic ice hockey.

Canada had won gold at the previous four Winter Olympics but American forward Jocelyne Lamoureux-Davidson scored the winning goal to hand Team USA the gold.

It was a tense match throughout, with Hillary Knight opening the scoring for the U.S. before Haley Irwin and Marie-Philip Poulin put Canada ahead. America’s Monique Lamoureux-Morando then scored the equalizer to take the match into overtime.

The win marks the first time the U.S. has won the women's ice hockey Winter Olympic final since the 1998 Nagano Games.
